Since 2014, Paws of War has brought more than 600 dogs and cats, rescued by U.S. troops serving overseas to stateside safety. It has provided 100’s of veterans with service and support dogs rescued from kill shelters. Its mission is to honor and support veterans, active military members, and first responders with services that enrich their lives through the rescue and training of service dogs for independence, adoption of companion animals, rescue of overseas animals in war zones, and other essential services to assist our heroes in need.
Shannon and Ted Skokos first learned of Paws of War when they heard the story of Tiny Tammy. She was a young pup initially found cowering for shelter amidst rubble in the war torn Middle East, when American soldiers discovered her back had been broken and she could not move her hind legs. Tiny Tammy was starving, dehydrated, and in agony, but the soldiers did not give up on her, daily making rounds to care for her, take her food and water, and show her kindness. This continued until one day, the soldiers looked up from their troop base to witness Tiny Tammy having drug with all her might her hind legs quite a long distance from her makeshift shelter to the base, presumably having followed their scent and tracks on a mission of her own to unite with her caregivers. One of the soldiers, Sergeant Jack, became determined to save Tiny Tammy and reached out to Paws of War to determine if there was any way to rescue her and have her treated in the U.S. so that when he returned from his deployment he could give her the life she deserved. Our Foundation’s founders saw the soldier’s plea for help on FOX News and could not hold back the tears. They knew they had to help, and are honored to have played a small role in the rescue of Tiny Tammy. To learn more about Tiny Tammy, watch the video below, and be prepared to have tissue nearby.
